Save of the Season

There isn’t a nice way of saying this: one of my favourite football clubs might cease to exist in the near future.

I’ve spent three years as a photographer with Kvartali — a plucky grassroots club from a working-class area of Tbilisi, Georgia — documenting their journey from being an upper-mid-table team to challenging for the first division title, to losing most of the squad to bigger clubs, to getting into the Georgian Cup final last season. We’ve seen it all together. Now the club needs our help.

It’s the mid-season break now in the women’s league in Georgia. Many other clubs are looking at improving their squads. Kvartali have to face a painful reality of not being able to cover their operational costs for the second half of the season. No sponsorship deal. The football federation subsidies aren’t even nearly enough, especially given the new league format with more fixtures to play. Cash injections from the club director could only get the club this far.

I’ve always been quite shit at letting go

Never done anything like this before, so no idea if it’s going to work, but it feels like a marginally better thing to do than just sit on my arse and sulk. So hereby I am asking you — the good people of the Internet — for your help. This club has given so much to so many people. Now it’s our time to give something back.

The operational costs per month for the club is 3,300 EUR or roughly 10,000 GEL. If you feel like making a donation, I can assure you any amount counts, and any help means the world to this club.
